This is currently a personal project aimed at being released as open source. At present I'm inviting a limited set of people to test the application and give me feedback. If you are interested in participating, please apply for access.
Online
Use it in your browser: nothing to install, any computer will do. Online is by invitation: log in if you have one, or ask for one.

Local install
Retrieving weather and current models directly from the meteorological services is slow and cumbersome, and some of them require registration and API keys. We have created a relay that retrieves, updates, cuts to size, compresses and then provides the models to the app. Using the relay is vastly faster and easier. The transfer is secured and needs transfer keys. You need to send yours to me to enable your access to the relay.
Install instructions
Mac
Do these steps once, in this order.
Download and unpack
- Click Mac (Apple silicon), or Mac (Intel) on a Mac with an Intel processor (it needs macOS 13.5 or newer). Not sure which you have? Apple menu › About This Mac says Chip (Apple) or Processor (Intel).
- Open your Downloads folder. Safari usually unzips the file by itself; otherwise double-click the zip.
- Open the new WeatherRouting folder.
1. Install
- Double-click Install.
- The Mac says it cannot check the file. Click Done (or OK).
- Open System Settings › Privacy & Security. Scroll down. Click Open Anyway next to "Install". Type your password.
- Click Open. A window says "WeatherRouting is installed". Close it.
On an older Mac: right-click Install, choose Open, then Open again.
Install puts WeatherRouting in your own user folder: after that you can delete the unpacked folder and the zip.
2. Make my key
- Double-click Make my key.
- Type your name and press Enter.
- The window shows your key: one long line starting with "ssh-ed25519".
- Select that whole line with the mouse and press Cmd+C to copy it.
- Write a mail to Steef (steef@vanbraband.org), paste the line with Cmd+V and send it.
- Or attach the file "WeatherRouting key for Steef.txt" from your desktop instead.
Steef adds your key. He tells you when it is done.
The relay on mx keeps a record of what you download (which models, how much and roughly where), so Steef can see how the app is used, and keeps the messages you send.
3. Start WeatherRouting
- Double-click Start WeatherRouting on your desktop.
- Your browser opens WeatherRouting.
- Keep the Terminal window with the text open. Close it to stop WeatherRouting.
First weather
Open the Areas tab, open an area and press Refresh. The first time this takes a few minutes.
A new version
- Close WeatherRouting (close its window).
